In 1998 authorities officially changed the scientific name of the Dwarf Sperm Whale from Kogia simus to Kogia sima. Known for their flat nose, the dwarf sperm whale was appropriately given the Latin name simus which translates as “flat-nosed.” However, simus is the masculine translation of the adjective and in 1998 taxonomists give the species the feminine version of the translation – sima – turning the Kogia simus into Kogia sima, the current scientific name.
