Johan Bryde (1858-1925) was a Norwegian whaler who later was co-founder of the South African Whaling Company in 1908. The whaling industry in South Africa continues today and one of the resident whales off the coast is the Bryde’s whale. Considered one of the rorqual whales, Bryde’s whales can grow to 55 feet (16.5 m) and 90,000 pounds (40,000 kg).
