The scientific name Lagenorhynchus albirostris for the White-Beaked Dolphin is derived from the Latin word for “bottle” (lagenos), “beak” (rhynchos) and “white” (alba). The largest member of the genus , the White-Beaked Dolphin is also called a “squidhound” by Canadian fishermen, referring to the animal’s preference for squid.
